Great product for the money but ... 9/16/2012

...not designed for streaming video while more than 1 other person is using the internet because it does not have the memory or processing power to do so.

      Very good router 4/14/2011
A Computer Guy from Denton, Texas

After the other (bad) review, I called tech support, pre-sales support and they openly told me that the router carries a 1 year warranty; IE: With stock firmware when the router has a problem, they replace it - simple as that (I have no ideal what happened to the other guy/gal).... Now for the review.........Firmware is stock, up to date, telnet (bash) prompt open, and DLNA server installed on USB drive (not scripted into the config (no autostart)) -The GOOD- LAN to LAN is fast and consistent no problem with drop-outs, WAN to LAN is the same and I see no difference on LAN to LAN when a 3rd machine is hitting the WAN. Wireless is actually very impressive (for no external antennas) my router is on a shelf near a window and my friend can connect to it in his house 200' away. -The Neutral- QOS is nice as it flags to MAC's, but even though the packets are flagged properly I don't see it scaling connections as it should. QOS table is almost full in stock firmware, so delete the services you don't / won't use. Setup on some of the more advanced features is klunky; most users will never touch that stuff though so not a bad thing. -The Bad- Opensource firmware takes a significant performance hit. No RADIUS support on stock firmware. Lacks better firewall (service blocking) on Guest network, lacks QOS - bandwidth control on guest network. No USB keep-alive, or (delay) timer for power-up on USB drives with power saving features: Drive will power down and vanish if you don't turn it off (from a USB on a computer). Overall I would recommend this router to anyone. Since the router is supported by opensource, firmware updates will continue as long as people are still using it (no real end of life on the product) and that is a big bonus.

      Horror Story 9/4/2010
      Disgruntled Customer in from California

I'll start with the following: "I WILL NEVER EVER BUY A NETGEAR AGAIN". Now that I got that out of the way, it started to show signs of trouble after 3 weeks of ownership. Wireless internet cuts off all the time same with Wired internet. The USB External hard drive I have connected to it started to disappear around 3 weeks as well. In order to make the USB work again I have to hard reset the router for it to work again, same with the wired internet. When the wireless goes out is much easier to reset, I just have to turn it off then back on. Called Netgear and they refused service, never mind I'm still well under their 1 year warranty. They say it's Open Source and hence, no support nor warranty will be honored. Now that was the main reason I won't buy their products again. I can understand having bad luck and getting a lemon but no warranty? Also the wired speed was very unpredictable for transferring files between wired computer in the home network. I would get speed as low as 16 and as high as 80. I just never knew what transfer speed I was gonna get in the home network. I tried all I could to make this work well, including asking for help at openrouter to no avail. Maybe one day I'll get the nerve to flash the firmware to DD-WRT. But for now it's a plastic paper weight. I finally, purchased a different router and all is well now. I've read many review and many are good but, are you willing to risk no warranty in case you as I did get a bad router? That's the main question here. I had an Open source router before by a different brand, wireless G, and if I call them today even out of warranty, they will help me over the phone. As a matter of fact I still have that old router, just in case.
